a visit to Changkat!

The elderly is very friendly. The main purpose for them to go to Tampines Changkat Community Centre is to feel up their time. They are usually alone at home in the day and they have nobody to talk to. In other words, they are bored and lonely. However, at first, they are not willing to go to the Community Centre because they claimed that they don’t have friends and will feel awkward to be surrounded my strangers. I chatted with them about how they discover the community center. I got a same reply from the aunties that I talked to : they were arrangement to a buddy that will visit them almost every week and chat with them. As time goes, they are literally friends and when they are invited to join the CC program, they accepted it and ended up be a frequent visitor of the CC.

The CC has a lot of facilities. There is activity room or called “lao di fang” in Chinese which means “the usual place” that also bring the meaning that the place that we usually meet up with our friends, something like your secret place. In this activity room, the elderly play board games, cards, majong as well as doing handicraft together. I realized that although they are from different races and may speak different languages, they can get along well. Everyone there is happy with each other’s accompaniment. There are volunteers as well to talk and help them. The environment is friendly and it is air-con so that the elderly will feel comfortable.

I was helping a group of Malay aunties to make lantern. They are decorating the lanterns and my job is to cut the flowers and patterns that they want. It is basically an easy task! Throughout the session, I chat with them, a Malay auntie tell me that she comes here every Wednesday and Friday. Usually, Wednesday is the handicraft day where they are gathered to do some crafts. She even showed me what they did in the past. I was amazed to see, the bags, key chains, clips and other decorative things they did. She also mentioned that on Friday, they will have potluck party. Everyone will cook their favorite dish and bring it to the centre to share. They will talk and have fun together, it is just like a party.

On the other hand, there is also a karaoke room so let the elderly enjoy themselves. According to my friend, they usually sing songs in dialect and they don’t really care weather do they sing in tune. They just want to have fun. Some of us also sing along with them. Surprising, most of them can sing pretty well!

The community centre also provide food for them. Hot food such as fried meesiam , fishball nuggets and spring rolls are served. According to the person-in-charge, the main purpose of this CC is to take care of the elderly, give them a place to hang out and mix friends instead of staying at home alone while their children are working. In my opinion, it is very important for us to take good care of the elderly, they are the one that take care of us and brought us to this wonderful world. Without them, who me are? Now, they are old and some even sick, it is our turn to take good care of them!

Open croissant

Sriously I am sick of wholemeal plain bread
Yeah, the brown and think toast
So let's make a twist

Instead  I used Croissant !
Bought a few days ago! Haha

Today's breakfast served sandwich!
3 choices : egg sardine.ham & cheese
Since I wanna stay healthy (although I still love junk food), I decided.SARDINE.
I even told the auntie that I don't want bread

As my croissant is in the fridge for a few days, I toasted it in my pantry
To be honest, ever since I tried open sandwich, I am in love with it
Now I have OPEN CROISSANT
transfer everything on the croissant and I am done!

Yeah! Tasty !

A day with Thai !!!

Don't ask me why
Maybe out of curiosity, maybe because nothing to do
Anyway, I went for a friendship day with the Thai workers in singapore

To be frank, I don't even know there is Thai workers in singapore
I thought singapore only has Bangladesh and Indonesian workers
So I am surprised that the amount of Thai people in singapore
That's why I signed up for the event

A little more about me: I can speak mandarin, Malay, English and Cantonese
But NOT THAI
although there is a handout given, I didn't really read through it
In other words, I cannot speak Thai at all
Hmm... Maybe I can say HELLO in Thai

The event venue is  near lavender, in a basketball court near north bridge food court
As I am not really familiar to singapore, I took some time to fingered it out the location
Anyway, after asking and searching plus getting lost, I manage to get to the venue although I am 30 minutes late! Haha
Blur queen!

Let's talk about what I have heard and seen there
Actually the Thai men usually work in construction sector
Most if them are dealing with electrical and supervised the construction projects
Their pay is not very high but it is enough for them
Oh, I also noticed that most of the workers are at their middle age
they have been in sinagpore for about ten year
Many of them can speak pretty good English and mandarin
I talked to them and asking them about singapore
To them sinagpore is nearer to Thai and that's the main reason they come over
Usually they stay at dorm that provided by the boss
Yet, it is all in the rural area like woodlands

I spoke to a worker and he mentioned that he has been here for 13 years
His children already 23 and 27
He is now 50+ yet still working
His daughter is a teacher and the son is also working in Thai
Yet he still need to work so that the family can have a better life

On the other hand, for the Thai women, they usually work as domestic helpers
But nowadays they usually come over for marriage
Many of them married Singaporean
There are still some women doing Thai massage yet fewer

The younger generation doesn't want to come singapore anymore
Because the pay is lower
They prefer to go Europe or Israel
For agriculture sector, usually they will go Israel for mass production using high technology
Thai is very good at agriculture especially in rice sector

I realized that Thai are very friendly and cheerful
They usually gather together for events
Although the pay is not high, they treasure what they have
They are creative as well
A great example is the games we played!

Can u imagine what we are playing?
Yup, I think u get it right
We need to use eggplant to "kick" the ball into the goal
I participate the game as well
It is quite fun!
Perhaps next year o camp should include this game

It is a great experience for me
First time get in touch with Thai
I realized that actually a lot of Singaporean is interested in Thai language and took up Thai in university
Some even when Thailand for exchange

a little small boy named Tim
3 year old boy that claimed himself as 5!
mixed blood Thai!
so cute!
